Reports have been confirmed of a major fire along Mombasa’s Bamburi beaches north of the island city which broke out last evening around 8 p.m.
The fire, according to reports, started at the Indiana Beach Hotel, rapidly consuming the makuti covered roofs of the main buildings, before burning debris then added a second fire at the adjoining Bamburi Beach Hotel.
The response of the county fire department was described as pathetically slow to this correspondent, contributing to makuti covered roofs and other parts of the two hotels to be destroyed.
No guests have reportedly come to harm though there is speculation that guest possessions may have been caught up in the fire.
Hospitality industry sources sharply condemned social media comments suggesting that the fire was set deliberately to claim insurance payouts during a time of low occupancy and it is understood that those who made such allegations will be pursued in accordance with Kenyan law.
More information is expected to come in Saturday morning at which time an update will be provided here.
