The 2015 Paris Accords set in train, a 3-decade, low carbon transformation, based on widespread recognition that “Climate Change is existential”.
It’s a game-plan to stabilise global temperatures by no more than 20C – and more likely 1.50C – by 2050, to prevent life across the planet becoming intolerable.
It’s this existential aspect that makes Climate Change the most important issue on the global agenda and it is the rationale for SUN – the Strong Universal Network. Under the initial guidance of our friend and mentor, the late Maurice Strong – one of the fathers of sustainable development, we are creating a platform for tracking, focussing and sharing climate response innovation as it intersects with travel.
Working with a small group of experienced but disruptive colleagues, we have developed SUN as an essential movement of increasingly engaged industry, government and civil society partners – focussed on climate resilience as a priority.
SUN will eventually be a global network of prefabricated solar enabled and cloud connected, action learning centres. Linking travel stakeholders in a destination focused, climate resilience network and targeting this matter within the overall framework of Sustainable Development Goals.
The first SUN Centre will be established in 2017 in the National Park Hoge Kempen in Limburg, Belgium, with the support of the University of Hasselt. We plan a regional network around the world in 2018 and a country based system by 2020.
To introduce SUN to the Travel & Tourism sector, we are proud to present “Green Santa” – a Climate Change primer in the form of a comic book. Co-authored by Felix Dodds and issued under the auspices of the UN Secretary General this 24-page fun document is designed to appeal to adults as well as kids. It explains the reasons why Climate Change is existential and the steps we need to take now in response.
Copies can be downloaded from www.thesunprogram.com where you can also find more background on SUN, our goals and how to engage.
Can we also wish everyone compliments of the season.
