Swissport Tanzania attains IATA’s ISAGO certification

NEW CARGO TERMINAL DUE TO OPEN AT JNIA IN DAR ES SALAAM

(Posted 16th May 2016)

Tanzania’s leading airline ground handing service company, Swissport, has reportedly attained IATA certification for safe ground operations, in short ISAGO, for their two main international airport stations in Tanzania, Julius Nyerere International Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport between Arusha and Moshi.
It was also learned that their new cargo terminal at JNIA in Dar es Salaam, estimated to have cost some 13 million US Dollars, is due to open next month and will be equipped with state of the art cargo handling, storing and tracking equipment, substantially speeding up clearances.
This news however is presently overshadowed by the drop in cargo handling during the first quarter of 2016, when the company apparently missed its own growth forecast.
In 2015 did Swissport handle some 18.000 tons of air cargo – the new cargo terminal will be able to eventually handle 80.000 tons per annum – but in Q1 this year did cargo handling shrink by over 7 percent from last year’s 5.252 tons to 4.866 tons. This prompted a miss of some 23 percent on the Q1 targets for 2016.
No specific reasons for the sharp reduction of air cargo handling could be obtained as the Tanzanian economy overall continued to grow.
