NEW RAIL CORPORATION TAKES OVER FROM TANZANIA RAILWAYS AND RAHCO
(Posted 05th March 2018)
The Tanzanian government made the Railways Act of 2017 operational when it was announced that the Tanzania Railway Corporation would take control and manage all rail assets in the country, including the upcoming new SGR railway project.
The Tanzania Railways Limited and RAHCO, the holding company for railways assets, will be merged into the new corporation which will remain under the Ministry of Transport and Communications as a state corporation.
Only 11 years ago did the Tanzanian government split the Railways Corporation into two entities but has now made a U-turn and restored all rail related operations, assets and projects under one roof.
The new SGR line from the port of Dar es Salaam will eventually form the core of the Central Transport Sector and link Rwanda with the Indian Ocean by rail, arguably well before the Mombasa – Nairobi – Kisumu – Kampala line will be ready and then be extended to Kigali, which remains an open question should the Tanzanian SGR reach the Rwandan capital first.
