NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS IN TANZANIA FROM 01ST OF JUNE 2019
(Posted 18th May 2019)
Travelers to Tanzania, come 01st of June, should no longer carry plastic bags in their luggage, as a qualified ban will come into effect on that day.
The ban applies for local residents and businesses in Tanzania as well as for tourists visiting the country.
Like in Rwanda, which for some years has banned the importation and use of plastic bags, will Tanzania too provide disposal facilities at airports and land borders.
A regular tourism source in Arusha, ahead of the upcoming #KaribuKiliFair2019, has expressed concern over how the ban at airports and land borders is being implemented, cautioning government officials to be friendly at all times and not set brute force examples which may create negative media impressions instead of highlighting the environmentally friendly decision to stop the use of plastic bags which have in past years greatly contributed to pollution.
Did the source say: ‘I hope visitors are not harrassed or threatened or extorted in any way. Officials at our border entry points should ideally undergo additional training in customer relations and learn how to be friendly at all times, giving our visitors a very good image of Tanzania from the moment they arrive‘.
