TRAVEL JOURNALIST DIES OF SUSPECTED HEATSTROKE WHILE FOLLOWING LEVI WOOD
(Posted 12th March 2014)
Harper’s contributing editor and regular writer for the Outside Magazine, GQ and the Men’s Journal Matthew Power passed away on Monday afternoon in Northern Uganda. He was accompanying British explorer Levison Wood who is presently in Uganda as part of his attempted walk along the entire length of the River Nile from the furthest contributory source to the delta at Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline. Aged only 39 year Matthew had reportedly extended his stay in Uganda and mission to walk alongside Levison to get to the bottom of what motivated the explorer and discover the full story behind the unprecedented and never before accomplished walk.
Information sourced in Kampala speaks of Matthew suddenly having been taken ill on Monday morning before collapsing and then passing away. Authorities have initiated an autopsy in Uganda’s capital of Kampala to ascertain the precise cause of death.
A globetrotting reporter covering travel, environmental and other stories, Matthew gained respect and admiration and had a wide readership vis a vis the magazines he wrote for as well as through his blog. Condolences are expressed to Matthew’s family, colleagues and friends.
