The President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, has announced in a televised address to the nation on 14 April 2020 that the country will go into a 21-day lockdown from midnight on 19 April 2020 in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The lockdown is expected to end at midnight on 09 May 2020, but might be extended. According to the “Public Health (Corona Virus Prevention, Containment and Management) Rules, 2020“, people in Malawi will not be allowed to leave their homes during the lockdown except for medical reasons (including visits to pharmacies), visits to food supply stores, courts or banks. All shops and businesses will be closed, except those classified as essential services.
