KAMEMBE AIRPORT DUE FOR JULY REOPENING
(Posted 07th July 2015)
Sources close to RwandAir have confirmed that the airline will resume flights from Kigali to Kamembe in July, when the runway repairs, resurfacing and extension works have been completed by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority.
Flights to Kamembe were until November last year hugely popular with not just tourists for the quick access to Nyungwe Forest National Park or the starting point in Cyangugu for the Congo Nile Trail but especially for Congolese travelers who crossed the nearby land border and then flew from Kamembe via Kigali into the airline’s growing network, especially Dubai and Johannesburg.
Air connections in Eastern Congo are notoriously unreliable and often thought unsafe – one reason why Congolese airlines are banned from entering EU airspace – but with RwandAir having attained IOSA Certification late last year does the Rwandan national airline not have such issues.
Congolese travelers can look forward to the airline’s Bombardier Q400 making a return to Kamembe in July, once again offering safe and timely flights across Eastern Africa, to West Africa and also to such destinations like Lusaka, the most recently added stop on the flights to Johannesburg.
It was also learned that a second Bombardier Q400, with the regular dual class configuration, will join the fleet of RwandAir in a few weeks, so watch this space for confirmation of the opening date of Kamembe as well as the arrival of the new aircraft.
