UGANDA AIRLINES COMPLETES MAIDEN FLIGHT TO NAIROBI AND STARTS COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS TODAY
(Posted 28th August 2019)
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, presently in Japan on an official visit where he is participating in the Tokyo International Conference, has described the launch of operations by Uganda Airlines as ‘historic‘, taking place two decades after the original airline was liquidated.
While commercial operations will commence this morning with a 6 a.m. departure from Entebbe to Nairobi – the earliest departure from Uganda to Kenya at daylight hours – has a ceremonial flight taken place yesterday already, carrying government officials and invited guests including media representatives to Nairobi. The mid day departure yesterday was used to give the airline’s flight the traditional water cannon salute and welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and making sure that the first commercial flight will be operate as per schedule and return on time without celebrations impacting on passengers.
The official welcome ceremony in Nairobi shifted from the tarmac to the Four Points by Sheraton within the airport perimeter area, ensuring that guests had an easy ride to and from without having to go through the initial security check at the airport gate.
The Ugandan delegation was met by government officials from Kenya including representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Kenya Airport Authority but also by leading members of the travel trade and the Kenyan media.
After the commercial launch of flights to Nairobi – a route to be served initially twice a day – are Juba, Mogadishu and Dar es Salaam then next as the airline is beginning to spread its wings into the skies over East Africa.
In September are then flights to Mombasa and Kilimanjaro being launched while additional destinations will come on line when two more CRJ900 aircraft have been delivered, now expected to arrive in Uganda in October with no firm dates announced as yet.
