BETTER LATE THAN NEVER COMES TO MIND AS THE SOROTI FLYING SCHOOL FINALLY GETS SOME ATTENTION
(Posted 01st of April 2019)
Information has emerged that the Ugandan government is intent to take over the Soroti flying school which was formed during the days of the first East African Community and was since then known as the East African Civil Aviation Academy.
Poorly facilitated did the institution often lack operational aircraft, fuel and other key resources and at one stage had to fight of land grabbers who wanted to heave off a major section of the academy’s land.
With the revival of a national airline ongoing – the Ugandan parliament in a special session last Friday approved a supplementary budget of 280 billion Uganda Shillings to make an overdue payment to the manufacturers of two CRJ900 jets – has the need also risen to train more pilots and aircraft technicians in Uganda.
Given regular budget constraints it remains to be seen how far and how fast this initiative will yield results and begin to produce graduates with the skills needed to join the aviation work force.
