The African Development Bank and the East African Community both have given their blessing to plans to build a 200 KM highway, linking Uganda and Kenya with a state of the art highway.
Alongside the upcoming SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) which will also link Kenya’s port of Mombasa and the capital Nairobi with Uganda, would this new highway, once financed and built, be a centenary project of major proportions, making road travel safer, faster and easier between the two countries. It would also be a critical element in the Trans African Highway, set to connect Eastern Africa with South Sudan, Congo DR, Rwanda and Burundi.
Uganda’s Minister of Transport. Gen. Katumba Wamala, is quoted to have said: “This road is more than a piece of infrastructure,. It is an economic lifeline that will drive greater integration and shared prosperity between Uganda, Kenya and our neighbours.”
For Uganda the highway aligns itself with the country’s Vision 2040, the country’s long-term plan to modernize its economy through large-scale infrastructure.
“Our trade and transportation will greatly improve,” added Gen Wamala before concluding: “Kenya is our biggest trade partner, and it’s our gateway to the East African coast. The faster the goods move, the better for everyone.”
