Uganda Tourism Board gets a boost to promote sports tourism from Brussels Airlines

MOUNTAIN BIKING EVENTS IN UGANDA GET BRUSSELS AIRLINES SUPPORT

(Posted 13th August 2015)

The upcoming two mountain bike races, supported by the Uganda Tourism Board’s campaign to promote sports tourism events, has seen Brussels Airlines come on board as a major sponsor.

Brussels Airlines is closely involved in biking events and has over the past years twice brought large numbers of cyclists from Belgium, including the airline’s CEO, to traverse the Pearl of Africa on two wheels.

Last week did Mr. Sebastiaan Spijkers hand over three tickets for the winners of the various events to UTB’s marketing manager Edwin Muzahura, further associating the airline with sports tourism. Passengers in the past were able to bring kayaks and mountain bikes on special promotions for special events and increasingly are visitors now traveling to Uganda to take advantage of year round good weather while practicing their chosen sport.

For the mountain bike races have over 250 participants, many from abroad, already signed up for the event but numbers on race day are expected to be significantly higher.

Apart from cycling, which is progressively gaining in popularity in Uganda is kayaking attracting many athletes from abroad who use the European or North American winters, when their white water rivers are often frozen over, to come to Uganda and train on the upper Nile’s white water sections to get ready for the new spring season at home when melting snow helps swell the river waters offering good sport.

When the new winter flight schedule comes into effect will Brussels Airlines for the first time in many years fly nonstop to and from Entebbe after delinking the stop in Kigali, which will be operated in conjunction with Bujumbura.
