Uganda Airlines has been accepted by the aviation authorities in Rwanda as the designated carrier of Uganda for flights between Entebbe and Kigali.
The information became available this afternoon after both countries had held the 11th Joint Permanent Commission meeting in the Rwandan capital.
Uganda’s foreign minister Gen. Jeje Odongo confirmed the development during a joint media conference when he was quoted to have said: ‘Uganda welcomes the acceptance of the designation of our national carrier -Uganda Airlines by the Rwanda authorities, which will lead to its commencing of direct flights from their hub in Entebbe to Kigali. This will further boost trade, enhance connectivity and contribute to strengthening people to people exchanges.‘
Uganda Airlines is now pursuing the required Foreign Air Operator Certificate from the Rwandan Civil Aviation Authority upon which announcements are expected as to when flights will commence.
For now is RwandAir the only airline flying between Kigali and Entebbe.
In another development has RwandAir also taken delivery last week of a third Airbus A330-200. The airline has also added a Boeing B737F cargo aircraft and is expected to add further planes in order to expand their African network and increase frequencies on key routes.
