#Uganda’s mountain gorillas the destination of choice for East Africa tourists

AURIC AIR ADDS MORE SERENGETI – ENTEBBE FLIGHTS ON RISING DEMAND FOR GORILLA TRACKING

(Posted 11th September 2017)

Figures speak for themselves, normally they do anyway for those with open eyes, and it is therefore no surprise that the combination of a classic East African safari with tracking mountain gorillas has taken a sharp upswing since Uganda decided to keep the tariffs for visits to the gorillas firm until early 2019.
Demand for direct flights from the Serengeti to Entebbe has subsequently risen to a level where Auric Air, one of Tanzania’s leading safari airlines – they also serve some 30 destinations across Tanzania with scheduled flights – has now gone daily according to the information received.

From ETD ETA To
Serengeti (All airstrips) 12:00 12:45 Musoma (Customs and immigration clearance)
Musoma (Custom and Immigration clearance) 13:15 14:20 Entebbe
Entebbe (Customs and immigration clearance) 15:30 16:30 Musoma (Customs and immigration clearance)
Musoma 17:00 17:50 Serengeti (All Airstrips)

The flights operate on ‘inducement’ i.e. the payment of the fare set by Auric Air and passengers arriving on these flights can then choose which option they prefer to reach one of Uganda’s two gorilla national parks, Bwindi or Mgahinga. Given the time of arrival will ordinarily an overnight stop in Entebbe be built in before then the next morning either taking the AerolinkUganda.com (ex EBB) or FlyUganda.com (ex Kajjansi) scheduled services to Kihihi / Kayonza / Kisoro or else commence their journey across Uganda by road.
Many international airlines now do operate services into several of the East African key airports and open jaw tickets do allow to enter the region at one gateway and depart for instance from Entebbe to their home country, be it on Qatar Airways, Emirates, Kenya Airways or Ethiopian Airlines.

Said Auric Air in their information:

In response to the high demand of flight requests we have added frequencies to DAILY for flights between the Wildlife of Serengeti to the Mountain Gorillas of Uganda‘.

Ugandan tour operators expressed their confidence that the sharp rise in demand for gorilla tracking permits for Bwindi and Mgahinga is a result of the Uganda Wildlife Authority holding their tariffs, resisting overtures and else to follow suit of what others have done to their own detriment.
We have no hesitation to exploit this situation to our benefit‘ said a leading safari operator last evening before adding ‘We used to send quite a bit of business for gorilla tracking across the border but for the last couple of months we are only selling Uganda when our overseas clients come to realise the massive cost advantage we can offer them. Not that any of us is complaining, this was a much needed shot in the arm for our businesses‘.
