RHINO FUND UGANDA AND UWEC BOTH IN DIRE STRAITS DUE TO LACK OF VISITORS

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary of the Rhino Fund Uganda at Nakitoma, as well as UWEC, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe, both were visitor magnets in their own right, until #COVID19 struck and in one fell swoop wiped out the tourism industry in Uganda.
No visitors, for both institutions, means no donations or income, needed to pay hefty bills for security, staff and other operational expenses like fuel and in the case of UWEC to purchase food on a daily basis as all animals kept there depend on regular feeding.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary of the Rhino Fund Uganda had in recent years made major steps towards financial self sustainability, given the ever rising visitor numbers whose on site donations helped to wipe out past debts and overdrafts and after a decade and a half in its existence finally put RFU on a solid financial footing.
No more that is … operational expenses are high, given the threat levels to rhinos in Africa – none have been lost to poaching in Uganda since the breeding project was started – and Executive Director Angie Genade has issued an appeal to raise funds for the sanctuary to keep in particular security operations up and running.
Notably have also those who in the past attempted to lay claim to the sanctuary disappeared at this time of need, showing their true colours when real support and assistance is needed.
