We are at the beginning of the United Nations “Decade of Action”. With just 10 years remaining to fulfill the 2030 Agenda and its Global Goals, UNWTO is making sure tourism is at the heart of the conversation. On the eve of the 40th edition of the FITUR tourism trade fair in Madrid, His Royal Highness King Felipe VI of Spain expressed his support for UNWTO’s work at an unprecedented special Gala Dinner. And at the end of FITUR, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez joined UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili in meeting exhibitors and representatives from the public and private sectors. These meetings set the framework for UNWTO’s intense FITUR agenda which also mapped the way forward, including a groundbreaking new initiative to reduce plastic pollution and the release of the latest data on global tourism arrivals and trends.
As we publich this UN Tourism News, the global community is facing the coronoavirus outbreak. While tourism is directly affected, the effects of this situation reach further. UNWTO is monitoring developments closely and exploring ways to offer support to the authorities and the tourism sector at this difficult time. |
