RHINO FUND ANNOUNCES SHORT TERM TRACKING TIME CHANGES

Visitors to Uganda’s only rhino sanctuary at Ziwa will have to take notice of some changes in visiting hours to the conservancy, as well as tracking times.
From the 18th to the 22nd of February inclusive will the gates only open at 10 am and close at 4 pm, to allow the darting and veterinary care for 12 of the now 15 rhinos.
Besides an ordinary vet checkup will microchips be implanted in the horns and the ears of the animals etched for better identification. DNA profiling too will be carried out while the rhinos are ‘under’ which in part will assist in future research and breeding.
The Rhino Fund’s sanctuary, like many other parks, has in 2014 faced some challenges with visitor numbers, especially when an entirely unjustified Ebola campaign in parts of the world succeeded in keeping visitors away from this part of Africa but indications are that 2015 will be a better year again. All donations and contributions made to the Rhino Fund are extending a life line for the sanctuary where recurrent cost regularly exceed donations, then relying on institutional supporters to come to the Rhino Fund’s aid.
