Virunga National Park surveillance aircraft crashes under unclear circumstances

A micro aviation Bat Hawk reconnaissance aircraft crashed near Ishango / Congo DR, killing both occupants.

The aircraft was engaged in guarding the Virunga National Park to ensure the safety of Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) agents operating in the Park.

Circumstances are unclear at present as to why the aircraft crashed and an air accident investigation is now going underway to establish the cause of the crash.

The Micro Aviation Bat Hawk is a South African-designed and manufactured light sport aircraft, primarily used for surveillance and conservation purposes in Africa. It is known for its affordability, reliability, and versatility, particularly in challenging environments.

The Bat Hawk is a high-wing monoplane with side-by-side seating and a high propeller position, often referred to as a “bushplane” due to its suitability for short takeoff and landing.
