Remember – Unite – Renew
These are simple words to mark the twentieth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda in April 1994.
The events of April 1994 led to huge suffering for the people of Rwanda and Eastern DRC.
Twenty years later, Rwanda has made enormous strides in rebuilding the country and travellers visit from all over the world. The Great Lakes region has progressively stabilised.
Volcanoes Safaris has been operating in Rwanda since 2000 and in Uganda since 1997. Members of Volcanoes staff have participated in national events and events near Virunga Lodge to remember 1994. We remember especially the loss suffered by the families of our staff and of the communities who live around our lodges near the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi Forest, the focus of our work with mountain gorilla tourism.
We pray that the events of 1994 can never happen again.
We can only repeat: Kwibuka. Remember. Unite. Renew.
