We welcome 14 Sheep and a Training Cafe!

We have been extremely busy this quarter – our Omwani Coffee is now being packed using bags and labels generously donated by visitors Karen and Steven Browne; the VSPT celebrated Earth Day by planting trees with community members at Kyambura Gorge Lodge and 10 footballs were donated by Volcanoes Safaris in the name of the recent photo competition winner, Luc Meriochaud.

It is important to the ongoing success of our conservation projects that we are able to fund our work. It is your generous donations that mean we can continue enhancing the livelihoods of people and wildlife around our lodges.

Sheep Project, Virunga Lodge

In June, Virunga Lodge launched a heifer sheep project in the neighbouring Sunzu village. 14 sheep were presented to 14 representative families as part of a pilot project. If the pilot is successful, the project will be rolled out to an additional 124 families.

Training Cafe – Kyambura Gorge Lodge

The Peace Corps sponsored training cafe began taking students on 10th June. Ten students aged 15-26 were interviewed and selected to take part in training for six weeks, obtaining basic service and food industry skills, before beginning an additional six week internship in a local lodge.

Electricity Project – Virunga Lodge

In collaboration with Sunzu village members, the VSPT and Volcanoes Safaris helped facilitate the funding and erection of a 2.7km power line through Kinoni village and Virunga Lodge, bringing electricity to 63 families for the first time.
