Dear Friend of Ol Pejeta:
Energy saving stoves video
Stoves saving more than just firewood
Several members from communities surrounding Ol Pejeta have benefited from energy saving stoves, installed by our partners Die Ofenmacher. Not only do these stoves reduce the amount of firewood needed, but they have significant health benefits too. // Watch the video.

Baby number 4 for Waya!
If you thought your mother was fierce, you’ve never met Waya. She’s got quite the reputation amongst our rangers, many of whom have been on the receiving end of a full-on charge. Ol Pejeta’s most protective mother has just had her fourth calf, and we have no doubt she’ll be as successful in raising this one as her previous children.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to get hands on with conservation you can touch. There are very few places in the world you can get this close to nature, and the people working to protect it.

Hippo
Did you hippon to know?

The name hippopotamus actually means ‘river horse’ – and despite their bulky size, hippos are actually quite graceful swimmers. They can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour if they have to, and are considered very dangerous. The hippopotamus is one of the few mammals to give birth underwater. Ol Pejeta’s Ewaso Nyiro River is the perfect hang out spot for hippos, who can best be seen from the Hippo Hide.

Improving cattle breeds around Ol Pejeta
Improving cattle breeds around Ol Pejeta
Through our agricultural extension services, farmers around Ol Pejeta can now have their cows artificially inseminated by a purebred Ayrshire bull. Local breeds are often prone to disease, and have low milk yields, incurring huge losses for farmers. The Ayrshire breeds are renowned for their resistance to diseases and high milk productivity, and are also easy to maintain and feed well even in dry conditions. This makes them cost-effective to keep.

Thailand not a ‘land of smiles’ for great apes
Thailand is known for its fabulous beaches, friendly people and great food. The Land of Smiles, as tourism promoters call it. But when Dan Stiles, manager of the Ol Pejeta supported Project to End Great Ape Slavery (PEGAS), took a trip to Thailand, he saw a very different side. From orangutan boxing matches, to chimpanzees and gorillas kept in solitary confinement.

Running For Rangers
They’re taking on one of the toughest ultra-marathons in the world to help rangers in Ol Pejeta and other wildlife conservancies in Kenya better protect wildlife. Watch the video to find out more about Running for Rangers, and how you can support them.
Swapping dust for dresses
It’s safe to say that most Ol Pejeta staff spend their working days covered in a thin layer of dust (or mud in the rainy season!). But on Saturday February 27th, we had a rare opportunity to scrub up and get into our finery for the SAWA Dream for Africa Ball.
