UGANDA CONSERVATION FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH ‘SPACE FOR GIANTS‘ TO TRAIN WILDLIFE STAFF

Uganda’s premier conservation NGO, the Uganda Conservation Foundation, has in conjunction with Space for Giants made it possible to have initially five Uganda Wildlife Authority staff selected for additional legal training.
With only ten trained inhouse prosecutors is UWA woefully understaffed in this crucial area, as cases pile up and prosecutors struggle to process them through trial to conviction.
The five selected will undergo a year of sponsored training at the Uganda Law Development Centre for a diploma which will allow them on successful completion of their course to become prosecutors.
It is understood that three of the existing ten prosecutors have also been selected to complete courses towards Master Degrees in Law and Post Graduate Law Diplomas respectively to further train them before they return to their jobs.
This follows the successful pioneering scholarships for other UWA staff earlier on, some of whom completed their Law Diploma while two more are presently attending courses in the Netherlands at the Free University of Amsterdam in Crime Analysis.
While commercial scale poaching for ivory is literally unheard of in Uganda has both subsistence poaching and trade for game meat grown in recent years, keeping the UWA law enforcement teams on their toes to prevent a further escalation of the illegal practices with subsequent damage to game populations inside and outside the country’s ten national parks.
