Our safari season is rocking!

Dear ATCNews Readers and dear Kafunta Friends!

Welcome to our June newsletter!

I’m delighted to write to you again after another exhilarating month of our safari season!

The wildlife sightings have been nothing short of spectacular.  Just around the lodge, we’ve seen numerous elephants and giraffes, as you will

see in the upcoming photos. Here are the latest updates and highlights from the past few weeks!

I was fortunate to spend several weeks at the lodge and camps, reconnecting with Anke, Ron, and the entire team. The lodge is bustling, often fully booked, and the Sunset House is exceeding our expectations in terms of occupancy!  So yes our season is rocking!

Life at the bush camps is good too!

The first month of the season at our bush camps,  Island Bush Camp and Three Rivers Camp, has been going super well too.

TJ at Three Rivers and Martin at Island and their fantastic teams are taking great care of our guests.

The game viewing has been amazing, and our guests are particularly enjoying the bush walks, which are exceptional in that area.

Wildlife Around

The wildlife around the lodge and the camps has been truly stunning. We don’t need to venture far to witness incredible sights, as elephants and giraffes frequently visit the vicinity.

Recently, we were thrilled to see 24 giraffes gather right in front of Kafunta – at once! An absolutely incredible spectacle! The abundance of wildlife right at our doorstep is undoubtely the signature feature of our properties, turning every safari into an unforgettable experience!

The photos above were all taken by Linda, our Lodge Manager at Kafunta, right from the main deck. While I took the photos below at Three Rivers Camp, just outside camp.

A Family Adventure In The Wild

When Michael and Caroline brought their boys to the Sunset House for a safari, they discovered just how magical it can be to explore the wild with kids. The private setting offered at Sunset House was ideal for their adventure. They boys had a blast on multiple game drives, spotting all sorts of animals right in their natural habitat. They learned a lot about the wildlife’s behaviour, making it an experience to be remembered.

Beyond the excitement of the safari, we also recommend adding some cultural activities in Mfuwe village, including learning about community projects at Project Luangwa, exploring conservation efforts at Conservation South Luangwa, visiting the interactive centre at CWET, and getting hands-on experience at the Batik workshop at Tribal Textiles.

And to top it all off, at Kafunta, every kid gets their very own Safari Adventure Book packed with a wildlife checklist and fun games. A small attention to make their “wild vacation” both exciting and educational!

All in all we are convinced that a safari is an ideal vacation for families, including multi-generations. Why not consider this for your next holidays?

Talking about holidays, our 2025 bespoke safari packages and rates are ready!

They feature meticulously prepared itineraries across Zambia, including South Luangwa, of course! The packages can inspire your next safari and can be tailored to your preferences.

Fun Run 2024

This year again, many of our staff participated  in the South Luangwa Fun Run. The Fun Run, organised by Conservation South Luangwa, is an annual event that promotes sports and community spirit. It features a 10 or 21km run together with fun activities like relays and tug-of-war. The event aims to raise awareness about conservation issues while boosting a sense of community and engagement among the people of the valley.

Shout out to our sporty team for participating!

Community and Conservation Updates

Project Luangwa

We’re excited to share Project Luangwa’s annual report, highlighting our impactful work and accomplishments over the past year. It’s impressive!

You can read the full report through this link. and find out how your support has contributed to community development and education efforts in the valley.

Conservation South Luangwa

Further to the above, we’re also sharing the annual report of Conservation South Luangwa, which highlights their key initiatives and successes in 2023

The report focuses on their efforts in wildlife conservation, community collaboration, and promoting sustainability in South Luangwa. Read the full report here.

Thank you for your continued support towards CSL’s programs, allowing the preservation of this incredible wilderness.

Chipembele Wildlife Conservation Trust

Anna Tolan and her team at CWET are such an inspiration! Recently, they organised “Nature Nights” excursions, offering young students the opportunity to camp overnight and learn practical skills in the wilderness.

They also held a workshop through their Aspiring Conservations Leaders program, helping participants sharpen their written communication skills.

While these activities might seem ordinary to many, they present significant challenges for rural children, making CWET’s efforts all the more impactful and commendable. Well done!

That’s all for now!

As I wrap up this month’s newsletter, I want to remind those of you who have stayed with us to send me your photos so I can feature them in future editions, like Irina’s leopard photo below.

Your snapshots and memories are a wonderful way to share the magic of your safari experience with everyone.

I’ll be back end of July for more updates!
