13 MILLION US DOLLARS SET ASIDE TO UPGRADE JOSHUA NKOMO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN BULAWAYO

The Acting Director General of the Zimbabwe Civil Aviation Authority Margaret Mantiziba, confirmed that some 13 million US Dollars have been secured to start upgrade work on the airport of Zimbabwe’s second largest city.
Work will include a new air traffic control tower and related equipment, a new fire station with new fire fighting equipment and other elements of work she did not provide information for.
It is understood that more funds will be required to complete what the ZCAA refers to as Phase 2 of the ongoing airport refurbishments in Bulawayo. (IATA BUQ – ICAO FVJN). The airport offers two tarmacked runways, of which 18/31 has a length of 2.548 metres or 8.491 feet while 02/20’s length is 1.326 metres or 4.419 feet.
Flights to Bulawayo are presently offered by Fastjet (Z) from Harare, a route only recently granted to provide additional seats at affordable ticket prices and by Air Zimbabwe which for long had a monopoly on the Harare to Bulawayo route. South African Airways also flies to Bulawayo in conjunction with an intermediate stop from Johannesburg.
