The African Development Bank (AfDB) has arranged a $1.2 billion commercial financing facility for Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway, backed by an $800 million credit guarantee that represents the bank’s largest such guarantee to date.

The Tanzanian government signed the facility for the 411-kilometre electrified railway connecting Tabora and Kigoma, known as Lot 6, according to an AfDB statement issued on Wednesday, November 04th.

The bank acted as the initial mandated lead arranger, structuring the financing and mobilising a syndicate of nine commercial banks.
