New requirement for all foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania

Effective 1st October 2026, all foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania will be required to hold valid Inbound Travel Insurance. Under the the insurance ( Inbound Travel Insurance) regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256. The requirement applies to entry through all airports, seaports, and land borders.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Cost & Coverage:
- Standard Adult Premium: USD 44 (or equivalent in TZS)
- valid for up to 92 days, multiple entries
- Purchase online before travel or on arrival
- Covers: Emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, and loss of luggage.
- Infants (0–2 yrs): Free
- Children (3–17 yrs): 50% discount
- Groups of 10+ Adults receive 10% discount
Who is Exempted:
Current NIC guidance lists Tanzanian residents, valid work/residential permit holders, diaspora, diplomats, transit passengers, and residents of EAC or SADC Partner States.
Which Insurance to Apply For:
If arriving Mainland Tanzania first- Entering Mainland Tanzania first ? Get NIC insurance (ZIC not required). Visitors Travelling to Zanzibar next do not require to purchase the Zanzibar (ZIC) insurance. Please keep a copy of the NIC certificate available for verification.
If arriving Zanzibar first ? Get ZIC insurance. Visitors travelling to Mainland Tanzania next do not require to purchase NIC Insurance. Please keep ZIC certificate for verification.
