ADDED BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE ON MAURITIUS – SEYCHELLES ROUTE RINGS IN FIGHT FOR MARKET SHARE

Following the confirmation that Air Mauritius will commence flights between Port Louis and Mahe, the Seychelles’ main island, did it not take long for Air Seychelles, IATA code ‘HM’, to respond.
HM has, effective 01st of July, upped their baggage allowance on the route, and only on that route, for business class passengers to two checked bags of 32 Kgs each while economy class passengers are able to check in two suitcases of 20 Kgs each (unlike most airlines using the 23 Kgs limit).
Notably has the added allowance also been granted on the Air Seychelles domestic route to Praslin, which is served by two dozen flights a day using Twin Otter aircraft, as long as the domestic sector is part of the ticket booking.
The mention that the added baggage allowance is only valid on the route between Mauritius and the Seychelles is an indicator that the fight has started for market share since Air Seychelles in the past held the monopoly on the route.
Air Mauritius will initially fly twice a week between the two islands and it is obvious that the two airlines have not been able to agree, at this stage, on a code share arrangement.
Only last week did Air Mauritius claim major honours during the World Travel Awards 2019 ceremony, which was incidentally held in Mauritius for the Indian Ocean islands and the African mainland. While Air Seychelles scooped two awards did Air Mauritius walk away with five trophies at the time.
