Belief In Second Chances.
The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is one of the best primate sanctuaries in Africa and is already the permanent home to 49 orphaned chimpanzees. We have well trained staff & veterinaries that provide the best care possible to orphaned &rescued chimpanzees. They also have experience with successfully reintegrating baby chimpanzees into their larger chimpanzee community
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is participating in the process of rescuing three baby chimps confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade in the Central African Republic (CAR). With the help of Friends of chimps in the USA, a campaign has been launched raise $15,000 to relocate these chimps to safety.
Sadly, these chimps are now orphans. They have lost everything and their best chance for survival and a long life, is the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Ngamba veterinarian and Conservations Program Director, Dr. Joshua Rukundo already traveled to CAR and conducted preliminary health exams on the three babies. Samples were collected and are being screened prior to clearing their import by the Ugandan Authorities. The sanctuary is working closely with CAR & Ugandan Authorities to make this possible.

Use Of Culture To Enhance Conservation.
The chimpanzee Trust under its Education program mainly funded by the Born Free Foundation, carries out annual school competitions in the neighboring Island schools whose objective is to create awareness on environmental conservation. Most Schools have managed to include environmental Education in their syllabus so as to educate them on this great opportunity and this awareness has been done through Music, Dance and Drama (MDD). This year the celebrations were help in Myende Community Primary school. The attendance was rather poor because of the Headmaster of the host School lost his father and many teachers plus pupils joined in burial on the same day. However the days program continued and it was a success.
A cherry on top at the end of the competition was that whichever pupil participated in the MDD got themselves a comic book. "IKURU’S JOURNEY TO NGAMBA".
