Angola’s “ghost elephants” vanished for decades and may have faked extinction to survive

Hidden deep within the wilderness of Angola, there is an elephant population that has endured years of conflict, including wars, poaching, and other threats, because it went into hiding, disappearing almost off the face of science. Dubbed Angola’s “ghost elephants,” these creatures remained unseen for quite some time, and many scientists feared that the species had been driven to local extinction. In recent years, however, studies on wildlife, satellite tracking, and conservation have revealed that elephant populations continue to exist in some parts of southern Angola.
