Information received suggests that a Skyward aircraft, registered as 5Y-GRS – a twin engined DeHavilland Dash-100 – suffered a bodged landing at El Wak, when upon touchdown the left hand wheels appear to have struck a rock on the side of the runway.
The 28 year old aircraft, first put into service in 1993, suffered extensive damage to the landing gear, the hull, the engine and propeller.
All 37 passengers and 4 crew on board escaped, on first reports, without injuries.
Added details just received also suggest that the aircraft landed at what appears to be a closed airstrip next to the El Wak Forward Operating Base, something the unfolding air accident investigation is certain to follow up.
