#RWANDA’S NEW AIRPORT SEEKS TO SET GREEN STANDARDS FOR AFRICA
(Posted 29th November 2018)
Rwanda’s new international airport, Bugesera, some 20 plus kilometres outside the capital Kigali, has been tipped to become the greenest airport in Africa.
From information received will a wide range of environmental best practice measures and the latest green technologies be incorporated in the construction process and the operation of the airport, when it is ready to receive its first flight in late 2020, the date the contractors were given for completion of Rwanda’s largest infrastructure project in modern times.
Phase one of the project is expected to cost over 400 million US Dollars, raised under a private public partnership, while phase two will then cost as much again if not more, given the ever rising cost of construction, especially in landlocked countries.
The airport seeks to become a carbon neutral facility by using renewable energy sources and related measures.
Repeated reference was made to the project in the African Green Growth Conference which took place in Kigali this week.
