Chinese woman nabbed at Nairobi Airport with over 100 kgs of blood ivory

ANOTHER ARREST AT JKIA OVER IVORY SMUGGLING – AND AGAIN A CHINESE CITIZEN

(Posted 01st August 2017)

About 120 kilograms of blood ivory were confiscated and the owner, a Chinese woman traveling from Harare via Nairobi to Vietnam, arrested when sniffer dogs and vigilant customs and security officers smelled the proverbial rat.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has over the past years gained a reputation for detecting illicit cargo like ivory, rhino horn and other banned wildlife products through the increase use of more sophisticated scanners, the use of sniffer dogs and special monitoring of transit baggage and passengers from other African destinations enroute to either China directly or other major cities in the Far East.Earlier this year was a similar consignment found at Hanoi’s international airport which could also be traced back to having transited in Nairobi but escaped the dragnet there.
The suspect has since been produced in court and proceedings are now unfolding with her in remand until a trial can begin.
