Domestic flight handling to shift to new Terminal 2 by 01st of March

OPENING OF ‘TERMINAL 2’ JUST WEEKS AWAY NOW

The Kenya Airport Authority has confirmed that the opening of the under construction ‘Temporary Terminal’ is now just a few weeks away with traffic being shifted to the new facility by 01st of March.

The new terminal, assembled from prefabricated parts, will be named ‘Terminal 2’ and will cater for domestic departures and arrivals. According to information received will some 24 check in counters handle domestic flights leaving Nairobi for Mombasa, Malindi, Eldoret and Kisumu. Six departure gates await passengers, two of them designed to handle international or regional flights which require passport control while the other four gates will exclusively handle domestic flights. Annual capacity of the terminal was pegged at a maximum of 2.5 million passengers. While called a ‘temporary terminal’ will security features and equipment for baggage handling be state of the art introducing the latest technology of scanners for baggage, hand baggage and persons.

The present domestic terminal, previously known as Unit 3 and recently renamed into Terminal 1D, will upon opening of the new facility be closed for major renovation and expansion, with work probably ongoing until late 2015.

Passengers using JKIA for their domestic flights, or connecting off international arrivals, are advised to check with their airlines about directions to the new terminal and to get confirmation of the exact date when the move takes place.
