ETHIOPIA WINS SEAT ON PRESTIGIOUS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES COMMITTEE

Earlier in the week was Ethiopia elected to serve on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the next four years.
The general assembly of UNESCO voted with 125 of 168 eligible states to vote to have Ethiopia brought on board as a holder of an ‘open seat‘, i.e. not one allocated for geographical reasons.
Ethiopia has at present 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of them the Simien National Park while the other eight sites are recognizing cultural and historical monuments and sites.
The election of Ethiopia comes hot on the heels of the 2019 UNESCO Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Price and of course the Nobel Peace Prize 2019 to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
