Ezemvelo seeks land to relocate over 1 000 elephants

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has issued an urgent plea to conservation authorities and private game reserves with adequate space to assist in relocating elephants, warning that limited capacity is restricting non-lethal management options. The agency emphasised that identifying suitable land remains the biggest obstacle and called on stakeholders to come forward with viable properties. As of April 2026, Ezemvelo is managing a major elephant overpopulation crisis in KZN, with 2,862 elephants in 22 reserves straining ecosystems, including 2,089 in Ezemvelo-managed areas.
