WFA (3 days)

What is involved?

This is a 3 day course that teaches the individual first aid skills that are vital in an emergency situation where immediate medical assistance is not available. Specific topics would include but are not limited to: Patient monitoring and management problems, wilderness wound management including animal injuries, bites and stings, head and spinal trauma, athletic injuries, re-aligning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, environmental emergencies, common expedition problems, medical emergencies, wilderness medical kits and CPR considerations.

Typical emergency medical technician and advanced first aid courses rely heavily on memorization of signs, symptoms and treatment procedures. Based on these lists students gain a rudimentary understanding of body systems. Wilderness first aid takes an alternative approach by stressing understanding together with memorization. We show students how each of the body systems works and how they interact with different systems. We believe that students who have a solid understanding of how the human body works will assess and treat patients more accurately and efficiently than students who just memorize lists.

Who is this course suited to?

Wilderness scouts, adventure instructors, tour guides, NGO field staff, teachers and parents who assist on school trips as well as those who spend much time outdoors such as photographers, conservation volunteers etc.

START DATE: Friday 28 November

END DATE: Sunday 30 November

LOCATION: RVA Ol Pejeta Camp, Laikipia

COST: USD 195 pp plus VAT incl. food and accommodation.

WFR (8 days)

What is involved?

This is an eight day advanced wilderness first aid course that teaches the individual first aid skills and extended patient care in an emergency situation where medical assistance is not available for a long period of time. It is an essential qualification for anybody working in tourism or in remote areas (more than two hours from professional medical assistance) In this first aid course more emphasis is placed on long term patient care management and specific injury evaluation. This course covers the three-day course topics in a more extensive manner while focusing on stabilization, treatment and evacuation guidelines for patients in remote environments.

Special topics include but are not limited to: patient monitoring and long term management problems, wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, athletic injuries, improvised splinting techniques, medical emergencies, CPR considerations, environmental emergencies and common expedition problems.

It may be used for wilderness medicine re-certification for those who wish for a more extensive refresher than the WFA program.

Who is this course suited to?

Expedition leaders and lodge management staff who operate in remote areas, adventure instructors, NGO field staff and other outdoors workers or enthusiasts who require a more extensive training program than the WFA.

All SOLO and RVA instructors have substantial experience in emergency first aid, backcountry travel and teaching and we constantly update our

curriculum to reflect the changes in wilderness first aid protocols.

“I can’t believe I was operating as a safari guide before without this qualification. The detail and professionalism is fantastic. It is a MUST for anyone working in the outdoors.” Neil – WFR

In fact, it is a must for anyone regularly taking himself, family and friends into Kenya’s great outdoors and will sure come handy even in the city, at home or in the office should a sudden medical emergency arise.
