It was learned that the Nairobi-based airline – a subsidiary of Kenya Airways – stopped operating the route from Mombasa to Zanzibar during the month of September.
The airline is however launching flights to Entebbe in early October, a route probably more viable compared to the Mombasa to Zanzibar sector.
While no specific reasons were given by the airline other than risen fuel costs and the deterrent demand by Tanzania that travelers must purchase a full scale travel insurance on arrival, regardless of already having such an insurance, and probably with superior terms, from their home country.
With most of the passengers previously flying on the route being local Kenyans or low cost tourist visitors, including from other East African countries, the 44 US Dollar cost of the insurance obviously proved to be too much to sustain the demand for seats on this flight.
