Nakku carries Sara through the flooded shore

On 18th January 2016 the community at Ngamba island woke up to a shocking surprise. The camp had flooded. Three of the tents that make the sanctuary tented camp were in the lake. It was a distressing sight.

Massive waves continued to hit against the vulnerable tent poles. This was indeed worrying.

Ngamba Island is having a taste of the current global climatic change. Effects from the current El Nino rains are biting hard. The water levels have risen to the highest in the last 10 years and our facilities are in danger.

The retainer wall before water level increased

With the help of Friends of CSWCT and Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), we built a retainer wall over the shore to create a barrier between the lake and facilities a few months ago, but the huge waves have since gone over this wall. It is now a state of emergency; we need your support.

We would like to re-enforce and strengthen this wall as well as extend it round to
cover the whole camp area. This will cost about USD20,000.
