KENYA AIRPORT AUTHORITY SIGNS CONTRACT FOR ‘TEMPORARY TERMINAL’

News broke yesterday that the Kenya Airport Authority has finally awarded the tender for the temporary terminal at JKIA when it signed a contract with German company Roeder HTS.
The new temporary terminal, long talked about but finally pursued with some added vigour by KAA after the devastating fire in August last year which destroyed the entire arrival section of the main airport building, is expected to cost over 25 million US Dollars and will remain in place until the new mega terminal under ‘Project Greenfield’ is ready in a few years time.
The new terminal will provide an added capacity of about 2.5 million passengers per year and will operate besides the new Terminal 4 building when that complex, adjoining the present Unit 1 of the main concourse, will finally open. Once Terminal 4 is operational Units 1, 2 and reportedly also Unit 3 – presently used for domestic flights – are due for a complete renovation and modernization while an entirely new arrivals complex will be constructed once the ruins have been demolished.
Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the region’s main cargo and passenger hub but has been suffering from serious capacity constraints, made worse by the August 2013 fire which resulted in a series of make shift measures including tented facilities, though also prompting an accelerated pace in completing Terminal Four, and as now learned, to put up the temporary terminal.
