Kamembe airport closes in November for runway repairs

RWANDAIR ANNOUNCES SUSPENSION OF KAMEMBE FLIGHTS DURING RUNWAY REPAIRS

(Posted 26th September 2014)

RwandAir yesterday confirmed that effective 01st of November flights to Kamembe airport will be suspended, following a recommendation by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority.

It is understood that the single runway at the airport will be undergoing major works and be re-surfaced to improve safety and reduce stress on landing and departing aircraft.

RwandAir is presently serving Kamembe twice a day with their Bombardier Q400NextGen, offering swift access to this part of the country for tourists wanting to visit Nyungwe Forest National Park or start hiking the Congo-Nile Trail, but also, and more importantly, provides a link for many Congolese travelers who come across the land border by car and then travel via Kigali to their final destination across the RwandAir network.

Following the closure of the airport in Gisenyi for security reasons – that airport is located very close to the border with Congo DR – was Kamembe the remaining domestic destination for RwandAir.

Flights will resume when the runway works have been completed although no timeframe was given at this time how long that will take. For more information about RwandAir click on www.rwandair.com and for details about Destination Rwanda visit www.rwandatourism.com
