Kenya Railways has announced free train tickets for members of the public as part of an initiative targeting commuters during this year’s Customer Service Week celebrations.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 6, Kenya Railways said it had partnered with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to offer the temporary free tickets.
“Kenya Railways has partnered with the KRA to offer free commuter train tickets to members of the public as part of this year’s customer service week celebrations,” the corporation announced.
The railway operator urged Kenyans interested in benefiting from the offer to follow its official social media pages for details on the routes, dates and procedure for accessing the free tickets.
The offer comes at a time when train transport remains one of the most affordable transport options, with Kenya Railways charging different fares depending on the route and class of travel.
For the Nairobi-Nanyuki Safari Train, passengers travelling from Nairobi pay a flat fare of Ksh150 for destinations within the Nairobi zone, including Makadara, Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa, Ruiru and Kalimoni.
Passengers travelling beyond the Nairobi zone pay Ksh150 to Thika, Ksh160 to Mitubiri, Ksh180 to Makuyu, Ksh200 to Maragua and Ksh250 to Murang’a in economy class.
The economy fare rises to Ksh260 for Sagana, Ksh300 for Karatina, Ksh350 for Kiganjo, Ksh360 for Chaka and Naro Moru, and Ksh400 for Nanyuki.
If implemented, commuters living in and within Nairobi will save between Ksh150 and Ksh400 during the service week, which began on October 5 and is expected to end on October 9, 2026.
The free-ticket announcement comes as the Corporation continues to upgrade its commuter rail network, including a railway connection being developed to serve the Talanta Sports City Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
