The Kenyan government has announced plans to start construction and rehabilitation of new railway projects as part of the 2026/27 budget. The move is aimed at the provision of affordable and safe mass transport and logistics across the country.
Among the funding allocations was Ksh20.84 billion set aside for the development of SGR Phase 2B and 2C, covering approximately 369 kilometres. These works have already started with the construction on the Naivasha to Kisumu and Kisumu to Malaba already underway – in conjunction with Uganda also rolling out their own SGR line from Malaba to Kampala.
The Kenya government will also provide Kshs 2.03 billion for the construction of the Riruta to Lenana to Ngong railway line, a new construction expected to massively improve affordable and safe commuter transport within the greater Nairobi area.
Added new projects were also named as the Nairobi to Nanyuki branch line, the Kisumu to Butere to Lesuru to Kitale line and the Gilgil to Nyahururu routes, for which funding has been set aside.
