(Posted 05th April 2014)

The Kigali Serena Hotel was yesterday recognized by the Rwanda government for its efforts towards environment conservation. The hotel received the ‘Best in Environmental Protection Award’, where the Kigali Serena Hotel was competing against 14 entrants in various categories that included social community support, environmental protection and conservation, poverty alleviation, workforce and welfare development.

The awards, held for the very first time in Rwanda, seek to evaluate corporate contribution towards sustainable business practice now and in the years to come.

Speaking at the ceremony, which was held at the Kigali Serena Conference Centre, the Human Resource Manager of the hotel, Anne Kirungi welcomed the recognition saying ‘Serena Hotels Africa has indeed been keen on environmental conservation for about two decades now. This is mostly done in Serena areas of operation and Kigali Serena Hotel is no exception- each Serena unit has a set target of activities to implement every year, especially when it comes to giving back to the community. This in deed poses a challenge for us to continue doing even more that we do now, and we are humbled to receive this prestigious award today’.

At the same ceremony, the Chairperson of the awards committee Ms. Alice Mignonne said when announcing the winner: ‘The selection process was difficult due to high competition, given most entrants had done a lot to give back to the community’.

The Kigali Serena Hotel, the city’s only 5 star property, and its sister hotel the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in Gisenyi, have over the years established themselves as examples of best practices in various fields of their operation and setting such industry standards has now been rewarded, a challenge for others to emulate. Congratulations to Charles Muia and his team at the hotel for receiving this well deserved award.
