Lamu – Festivals and so much more

3RD LAMU PAINTER’S FESTIVAL NEARS FINISHING LINE

(Posted 12th February 2015)

This year’s edition of the Lamu Painters Festival, which ends on Sunday 15th of February, has once again generated local and international attention for Kenya’s most ancient town.

Thanks to many individuals, the Shella Welfare Group and notably Herbert Mentzer, the founder of the festival, did the Lamu Painters Festival once again take place in Lamu this year for its 3rd edition.
Over the coming days are several events scheduled to take place between tomorrow and Sunday when the festival ends.

  • Thursday 12th Feb, from 10am to 2pm : 14 painters working at Peponi Hotel, action-painting ! You’ll find them everywhere in Peponi, on the terrace, in the gardens, on the roofs, on the beach, and definitely at the bar !
  • Thursday 12th Feb, at 6pm : Exhibition and reception at Baitil Aman Hotel (it runs till the 16th), oil paintings, watercolours, charcoal drawings, sketches… can’t wait, I already fell in love with Gineke Zikken paintings…
  • Saturday 14th Feb, from 2pm : in front of Shella Beach, the great Painter’s Dhow Race of course !! With entertainment on the beach by Anidan Drums and Shella Drums.

The theme of this year’s festival was given as ‘Bridges to Africa’ and artists have come from Europe and beyond to participate in capturing Lamu’s special appeal, which takes visitors back in time.

Other major festivals in Lamu are the annual Lamu Cultural Festival, the Lamu Maulidi Festival and the Lamu Yoga Festival but visitors throughout the year will find peace and tranquillity as they explore the old town, which gives glimpses into days long passed. The Lamu architecture is unique and at the waterfront are still dhows being built using nothing but wood and sisal ropes.
