Following an extensive selection process has the Madhvani Foundation through its scholarships Sub-Committee has awarded a record 172 University Scholarships worth 711,000,000 million UGX to gifted but financially challenged students for the year 2016/2017 academic year. It is the 14th consecutive year the Foundation has given out scholarships since the reinstatement of the programme in 2003.

The Foundation received over 1,100 applications from all regions of the country of which 338 were shortlisted for final face to face interviews. The final list of students chosen represent the most promising and deserving students we were able to find‘ explained Hon. Gabriel Opio the Chairman of the Scholarship Sub – committee before adding: ‘We are confident they will complete their studies and go on to lay a valuable role in the development of the country‘.

Speaking about the geographical and demographical distribution of the scholarship recipients, Mr. Opio revealed that the Eastern region dominated the number of scholarships awarded with 33% of the total while the central region came second with 27 %. Of the professional courses, Engineering and Commerce disciplines were awarded the largest percentage with 43% and 37% followed by Medicine 27% and Agriculture 21% respectively. ‘This is in line with the vision of the founder of the Madhvani Group who believed that the secret to Uganda’s development lay in the education of its people in science and technical courses‘ explained Hon. Gerald Ssendaula the Foundation Chairman.

Notably though were again a number of students with courses in Forestry, Environmental Studies, Hospitality and Tourism awarded scholarships, showing the increasing importance to Uganda’s economy of such studies as the economy expands and more well trained graduates are needed to build local Ugandan capacity in the sector.

The University most in demand remained Makerere University, one of Africa’s leading institutions, but others have gained promincence too, among them Kyambogo, Makerere University Business School, Busia and Gulu.

Mr. Ssendaula and the foundation at large encouraged gifted but financially challenged students to apply for scholarships in the 2017-2018 academic year on the Foundation website www.madhvanifoundation.com when the application window opens at the end of March 2017.

The Madhvani Foundation was established in 1962 on the eve of Uganda’s independence to honour the vision of the founder of the Madhvani Group, the late Muljibhai Prabhudas Madhvani.

In 2003 the Board set up the University Education Trust with the principal objective of promoting University level scientific and technical education for the betterment of the people of Uganda. Since its inception, the Trust has educated over 2,000 University students and provided scholarships worth over 4.3 Billion Uganda Shillings, making it the largest such foundation in Uganda and a leading one not just in Eastern Africa but the entire continent.
