Malawi: Immigration Officers strike fails as Director General given the boot by court verdict

(Posted 06th June 2024)

The High Court in Blantyre has earlier today nullified the appointment of the Director General of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Rtd. General Charles Kalumo.

The judge in his ruling said that the appointment was done in violation of the applicable law.

The removal of the Director General will resolve one key issue which led to the strike notice given yesterday, which would have effectively shut down entries and exits in Malawi, as reported by ATCNews.

Information received from Malawi indicates that immigration offices at land borders and airports worked as normal, although staff was ‘working under protest‘, at the time still demanding that the immigration chief be removed, something which then happened later in the morning by court ruling.
