Mauritius receives multiple accolades in China

Mauritius will receive three awards in China. Thus, revealing itself as a rising island destination in just a short span of time, highlighting the combined efforts of the MTPA and Air Mauritius on this emerging market.

Two trophies will be awarded to Mauritius by the Ctrip group, leader in the travel and tourism industry in China. In fact, the island was ranked 9th in the "Top 10 Best Overseas City" and 2nd in the "Top 10 Island Destinations" for the year 2013.

Mauritius has been voted as “The Best Emerging Island Destination” by the Chinese magazine “Voyage”, specializing in high-end tourism and travel industry in China. This award will be the only trophy awarded to an island destination by the magazine “Voyage”.

“Mauritius is undoubtedly a rising island destination on the Chinese market. These awards reinforce how successful Mauritius has been in its process of diversification on its target markets. A first step, which is very significant to an expansion of our tourism markets in Asia, more specifically China”, revealed the Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Michael Sik Yuen.

A prestigious ceremony will be organised by Ctrip at the Shanghai Hyatt Hotel on 28th of February with 300 eminent guests including representatives of domestic and foreign tourism offices, airlines, tour operators and the press.

On the other hand, the awards ceremony hosted by the magazine “Voyage” will be held in Shanghai JE on the 6th March. This event will welcome 250 guests including representatives of domestic and foreign tourism offices, airlines, travel agents, media and several Chinese companies.

These distinctions coupled with the promotional campaign, will certainly increase Mauritius’ visibility as a tourist destination on the Chinese market in 2014 for several months. Moreover, with the broadcasting of the celebrity reality show by the famous presenter Chen Luyu in April and the release of the two films namely “5 Minutes to Tomorrow" and "Breakup Guru", in June and July, it is expected that more Chinese travelers will visit Mauritius.

It is good to note that for 2013, the Chinese market experienced an impressive growth of 100.7 %, where 41,913 Chinese has visited Mauritius in 2013 against 20,885 in 2012. For the month of January 2014, tourist arrivals from China grew by 298.7 % with 6706 Chinese tourists against 1682 in January 2013.
