(Posted 25th June 2014)

Kenya Airways’ Chairman of the Board of Directors yesterday announced the appointment of Mr. Mbuvi Ngunze, presently Chief Operating Officer of the airline, as the successor of Dr. Titus Naikuni who is retiring at the end of November after serving over 11 years at the helm of The Pride of Africa.

Said Evanson Mwaniki in his announcement: ‘The Board has finally reached a unanimous decision on this matter. As such, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Mbuvi Ngunze, who is the current Chief Operating Officer in KQ to the role of Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways Ltd., with effect from 01st of December 2014. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Kenya Airways I also wish to take this opportunity to call for your full support for Mbuvi Ngunze as he takes over the leadership of the company’s day to day affairs, and to wish Dr. Naikuni and his family Godspeed as he prepares to go into his retirement’.

It is understood that recruitment for a successor of Mr. Mbuvi as COO will begin immediately to have the role filled when Mbuvi moves up as CEO come December 01st.

Several Kenyan aviation sources have expressed their support for the decision and saw it as affirmation of Kenya’s ability to develop top talent, after the HR consultancy Spencer Stuart had looked at applications for the position from around the world, put Mr. Ngunze on the short list and saw the Board accept him as the candidate with the highest scores and best prospects to lead the airline into the future. Congratulations to Mbuvi for his appointment!
