TWA’s FORGOTTEN TIME CAPSULE AT JFK TO
BE TRANSFORMED INTO WORLD CLASS HOTEL

John F. Kennedy International Airport is probably one of the most prominent airports for international travel. Whether your destination is NYC or you are saddled down for a (hopefully short) layover before making your way to Europe, you have been privy to the vastness of this micro-city known as JFK. I bet that you did not know that it is also home to an abandoned retro-chic flight centre and NYC landmark that is tucked away in the forgotten Terminal 5.

The flight centre was originally opened in 1962, and served as mid-century modernist plaza for those arriving and departing the Big Apple. Its (then) contemporary design, courtesy of Eero Saarinen, takes you to another world where flight travel was luxurious and sleek. Financial decline eventually lead to the terminal and centre closing down its services in 2001. Recently with the help of MCR Development and its privately-funded $265 million plan to refurbish the centre to its original 60’s lustre – with intentions of eventually making it into a ‘world class’ hotel, promising to preserve its natural beauty. These photos taken by Tod Seelie however look more like a grounded version of 2001-A Space Odyssey.

DESTINATION OF THE MONTH
SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE – KENYA

Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and semi-desert park located in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The park neighbours the homes of the Samburu tribe of Kenya, a tribe known for their remote culture, pastoral and nomadic way of life. Due to its remote distance and the fact that it was inaccessible for many years, the park has retained a naturally serene and quiet feeling. Besides the numerous wildlife found in this game reserve, the park is also a bird heaven! Measuring approximately 104 sq. kilometres, this unfenced savannah grassland is roughly 350 km from Nairobi. It is relatively small in size compared to other Kenyan parks, such as Tsavo or Masai Mara. The Uaso Nyiro River cuts through this reserve, drawing a big population of Kenya’s animals to the park.

Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised ‘Elsa’ the Lioness. Their story was made famous by the bestselling book and award-winning movie ‘Born Free’. The game reserve is renowned for its rare species of animals unique to the park, namely: the long necked gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and Beisa onyx. The elusive Kenya leopard is often known to visit the park, especially in the evenings. Other Kenyan wildlife present in the park includes cheetahs and lions, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. Birdlife is as plentiful as wildlife at Samburu National Reserve, which boasts over 350 different species of birds including vultures, kingfishers, marabous, bateleurs, guinea fowl, Somali ostriches and many others.

Experience the Elephant Bedroom of Samburu

The Elephant Bedroom Camp offers luxury in a setting of breath taking beauty. It is set along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River and shaded by doum palms and other trees that make up a green belt of riverine forest. The surrounding Samburu National Reserve is an area of spectacular scenery; its dry plains bisected by the meandering river, with the backdrop of Africa’s dramatic mountains, including Mt Kenya. The spacious tents have rustic and colourful African touches, offering all the comforts; including a private plunge pool on the deck, hot and cold running water, electricity (and complimentary herbal shower and bath products.)? The lounge and dining area is decorated with vibrant safari style, its soft intimate lighting assuring that this is the ultimate place to relax in between exciting game drives. Elephants, monkeys and impalas are among the camp’s many regular visitors, while Samburu National Reserve has a good number of lions and leopards and offers the opportunity to see many species endemic to northern Kenya.
