Mount Kenya Trust News Updates

MOUNTAIN DISPATCHES
July to September 2019

With Extinction Rebellion, Greta Thunberg on Swedish school strikes and climate protests taking headlines around the world, more and more people are taking action with an environmental message. Every day, MKT sees the impacts that a changing climate and rapidly increasing human activities on a precious ecosystem.

From plastic waste, logging to intensive fires, the mountain is under pressure and we can all do our part to help. Africa’s towns and cities will bear the brunt of the effects of climate change and there is much to do to prepare for change.

Join us to plant some trees, race at the 10to4 Mountain Bike Event, climb the mountain, organise a fundraiser or help install some water tanks. Take action in your own way and help us to change mindsets.

We can’t believe it either but we are gearing up again for another round of the 10to4 Mountain Bike Challenge! The 2020 event will involve an e-bike class, more events and lots of activities to keep the kids busy! Join us, take action and help to protect our mountain – by enjoying it!
ELITE FIRE FIGHTING TEAM

After the fires that tore across the mountain earlier this year, the Trust is investing in an elite fire fighting team, trained by ‘Working on Fire’. The team will cover both Mt Kenya and the Aberdares and will consist of five teams of ten rangers comprised of mainly MKT rangers, KWS, KFS and well-known community members.

Working on Fire provides management and firefighting training courses that enable governments, forestry operators and commercial landowners to protect, prevent and manage wild land and structural fires.

Asante sana!

We say a fond farewell to our CHSP Project Officer, Delphin Mukira, who is moving down to the Mara to work on community health projects anew. Starting as an intern, Delphin has grown into a leader with confidence and passion for her work, we know she will do shine wherever she goes.

She has been an integral cog of the team and will be missed! We wish you all the best and thank you for all the hard work, dedication and teamwork you have put into MKT. Good luck!

BONGO UPDATE

Camera trap photographs show the existence a single wild, lone female Bongo, along with her signs of footprints and dung in the Ragati Forest on Mount Kenya.

The Bongo Surveillance Project (BSP) reported recent heavy human intrusion of poachers with dogs in the bongo camera trap area. Domestic stock were grazing into the lower area. Signs of a fire where poachers have camped overnight are present and BSP hope the human intrusion can be stopped following community meetings.

Plans for a higher presence and patrol base in the area have been approved by KFS and KWS.

With thanks to our partners the Bongo Surveillance Project (working under the Rhino ArkUmbrella for the reports.

PLANT PLANT PLANT – The MKT moto!

How do you erase 100 years of carbon emissions? Plant trees – lots of them, says a recent National Geographic article.

Twice a year, the MKT team are out in force on the mountain, planting tens of thousands of indigenous trees and greening up the slopes. For the rest of the year, we are always on the go – looking for new planting sites and supporters. Whether it’s crawling through thick undergrowth, getting stuck in the mud or loading hundreds of seedlings in the pouring rain, we do it FOR THE LOVE of restoring our forest.

Increasing the Earth’s forests by an areas the size of the United States, says the article, would cut atmospheric carbon dioxide by 25 per cent!

Our 2018 Annual Report is avilable for reading online. Take a look at what we achieved last year here!
Busy Beekeeping

Four MKT staff members took a bee training course run by a team from ‘The Hive’ from Nairobi. We wanted to gain more insight into beekeeping for future community project ideas and planned bee-fence projects. The Hive Team are doing an excellent one day course. Thanks to Claire Jones who organised and hosted the course!

RAIN WATER HARVESTING

With five main water towers and ample rainfall throughout the year, Kenya as a whole is water rich. Despite this, the distribution and allocation of freshwater is not equal and as the population increases, areas with more freshwater such as those around Mt Kenya, compete with those down-stream.

We want to start ambitious new projects installing water tanks and guttering in 100 schools around the mountain. A 8000 litre water tank costs approximately 130,000KSH (US$1300 or £1000GBP). So far, we have so far installed three tanks and are looking for more supporters!
